What do they love most about playing their sport(s)?

BJJ is a sport, indeed. However, it is also a form of self-defense, as it builds self-awareness, self-esteem, and maturity. For women in the sport, strength comes from within and is demonstrated on the mats, in weightlifting, and through the ability to cross-train in other sports. She applies her BJJ knowledge when wrestling and working out. She loves the fact that she is constantly learning, whether she wins or loses.

Who inspires them—on or off the field—and why?

Jules will tell you that everyone she comes across at the gym and tournaments, inspire her. The five-year-old little girl on her first day is just as important as the black-belt who has been training for 20 years. Her gym is not just her team; it is an extension of her family. She spends upwards of 40 hours a week training and coaching with children and adults and looks to each of them for guidance, camaraderie, and inspiration.

What’s one moment in their athletic journey that makes you proudest?

Jules turned 16 last October and began competing against women only. Many of these women were 20-30 years older than her and even up to 40lbs heavier. She never once complained and often won. She recently had a match that lasted 21 minutes. 8 of regular and 13 overtime. She endured and came out victorious. She won with dignity, well knowing it could have easily gone the other way. Once again proving she is beyond her years in athleticism and maturity.
