Caleb enjoys hockey because it is a thrilling, fast-paced game with hardly a dull moment. The physical battles along the boards and hard-fought puck possessions showcase the determination. Hockey is also the ultimate team sport. Success depends on players working seamlessly together.
Coach Del Monte is patient, smart, and endlessly encouraging; he has a way of making every player feel seen. While other coaches obsessed over stats, Coach Del Monte noticed the little things: the extra reps after practice, the unselfish passes, the grit behind the mistakes. For Caleb, that trust was everything.
Two minutes left in the playoff quarterfinal, tied 1-1 against the league’s top team. Then, a whistle blew: penalty shot. Parents roared for both sides. The opposing goalie—the best in the league—locked eyes with him, but Caleb was ice-cold. A deep breath. Then—move. With a flick of his wrists, he feigned left, dragged right, and sent the goalie sprawling. The net bulged. Goal.
