You decide who will be named Youth Athlete of the Year, featured in a 3BRAND ad in Sports Illustrated, and take home $25,000
What I love the most about tennis is that it is more than a sport to me. It has brought my family and friends together to cheer me on the sidelines and taught them about a sport not many of my friends and family know much about.
Who inspires me the most on or off the field is all the Black athletes before me. Tennis players like Coco Gauff, Serena Williams and Arthur Ashe broke barriers and gained visibility in a sport that not very many people that look like me are in. Representation does matter.
One of my proudest moments in my athletic journey has been not winning a match, but speaking up for myself. I struggle with calling lines, the score, and challenging my opponent when they made a call. I never wanted to seem aggressive or unfair. So at times I just agreed. But over time, I realized that being silent or shy didn’t help me. Tennis is a mental game. I began to build my confidence in myself and trust myself. Now I have courage and confidence in the game.
