What do they love most about playing their sport(s)?

Declan loves the competition, sportsmanship, comradery, and belonging to a team. He has freedom as he skates around the ice, always trying to improve his skills and take himself to the next level. Even on physically hard days he will get out on that ice and give 100% to the game. In the off season Declan is an umpire and shares his knowledge of the game, following his dreams as he breaks the barriers of sports and being in a wheelchair. He has such a great love for both hockey and baseball.

Who inspires them—on or off the field—and why?

Declans older brother Sam has always included him in all of his sports endeavours and taught him about sportsmanship and team play, how to have humility and still be competitive. Declans mentor Mike has always been an inspiration to him. Showing him a world of possibilities, he shows Declan strength, and adaptability. Mike has made some of Declans wildest dreams come true. Declan grandpa is an umpire and has mentored Declan throughout his umpiring journey.

What’s one moment in their athletic journey that makes you proudest?

When Declan was told he might not ever become an umpire, he didn’t listen. He took the course and showed them he could position himself and work a game. At 13, he worked his first game and did amazing. He has been umpiring ever since and showing those around him his strength and professionalism on and off the field. Declan also volunteers his time with the youth sledgehockey team, helping them to learn new skills, showing them how to be humble and competitive and reach new goals.
