Thank you for generously supporting Derek in this year’s competition. Your support helps empower the V Foundation for Cancer Research and the Why Not You Foundation in their respective missions to save lives and empower today's youth to become tomorrow's leaders.
Being born without his right hand has never been a limitation for Derek. His athleticism is on par with the skilled players he competes with and against. Being an athlete with a physical disability has taught him how to handle pressure and remain resilient in adversity. He must overcome unusual challenges, which only builds Derek’s determination to achieve his personal goals. There is a difference between eligibility and victory, and Derek’s determined to not only participate, but to succeed.
Derek’s inspiration is his mother, Summer. She has supported him and his aspirations from the beginning. Despite a difficult pregnancy and even tougher delivery, Summer’s belief in Derek’s resilience and excellence has yet to waver. Her faith and guidance have taught him to never give up, especially not on himself. Derek reflects her confidence and strength both on and off the field. She inspires him to aim high, and to never settle for anything less than what he wants.
During Derek’s sophomore year, he broke his arm during a football game. Unfortunately, he broke it for the second time shortly after it healed. The injury cost him his varsity hockey season. However, he did not let this set him back. Instead of hockey, Derek took part in his school’s indoor track team. He kept his athleticism strong through recovery and resumed his regular sports when cleared. Derek returned stronger and unafraid. As his parents, we could not be prouder of his perseverance.
