What do they love most about playing their sport(s)?

Emerson values the honesty of rowing—what you put in is what you get out. The moment you slack on preparation, recovery, or mindset, the water reveals it. Race conditions, opponents, or circumstances don’t matter; what counts is the work done—or not done—behind the scenes. On race day, every decision, effort, and missed opportunity is reflected in your performance. Rowing offers no shortcuts—only truth.

Who inspires them—on or off the field—and why?

My biggest inspiration on and off the “water” is my coach, Howell Buot. He taught me the value of discipline over motivation and inspired me to lead our team. When he started rowing in college, he struggled coming in dead last but the team captain encouraged him to keep training and working with a “no man left behind” approach. Now, he leads our team through his relentless support and passion for the sport. He accepted me with all my flaws, helping me become the athlete I am today.

What’s one moment in their athletic journey that makes you proudest?

What makes me proudest of Emerson isn’t a regatta win, but the moments others go out of their way to tell me how kind, respectful, and encouraging he is to their child. When a new rower’s parent approaches just to say Emerson made their child feel welcome and fall in love with rowing—it means everything. His passion shines not just in competition, but in how he supports and mentors others. That lasting impact on people is what stands out most in his journey.
