I play for the thrill, the challenge of getting my butt kicked and trying to win—with teammates who inspire me every step. Even when I had to wash my two jerseys in the sink to play with no working washer, wake at 5am, ride an hour to school, do homework on the bench, and get home at 10:30pm after club ball—I kept straight A’s. Volleyball and surfing give me purpose, connection, and the strength to rise above it all..
My mom inspires me the most. She’s overcome so much—she always makes sure to support me no matter what. She got me to every game and practice, she even supported all my friends making sure everyone got what they needed from snacks to hair styles. She never gave up on me or the sport I love. On the court, my teammates push me. Off the court, she’s the reason I keep showing up.
The proudest moment for Emily is when she was invited to join the national travel team for White Water Volleyball Club. At U of O, she had 5 kills, a spike, and an ace. Even with a 4.0 GPA and being on the honor roll, it’s still hard for her to talk about her achievements. But that moment reminded her—she is strong, she belongs, and she’s worthy of being seen.
