What do they love most about playing their sport(s)?

Sports allow Garner to challenge himself. He loves being able to set goals and then work hard to reach those goals. He is never satisfied and continually sets new goals for himself. He also thrives on the competition sports offers. Competing against other athletes allows him to grow mentally and hone his craft. It gives him the opportunity to meet athletes from all over, and build connections with them. Sports are the ultimate avenue for Garner to share his love of faith and sports.

Who inspires them—on or off the field—and why?

Garner has found inspiration through his Christian faith. He references 1 Corinthians 9:24 "Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize." While it has a sports metaphor, the verse signifies his desire to live a God-fearing life. He is also inspired by his dad, mom and brother who have been there from the beginning. Whether by coaching him, supporting him, or encouraging him along the way, each has had a positive impact.

What’s one moment in their athletic journey that makes you proudest?

Garner was in an accident at the end of his sophomore baseball season. As the team was preparing for a crucial seeding game before the playoffs, a ball hit Garner in the leg at practice. X-rays showed a severely broken leg. Not once did he complain about the situation or blame anyone for the incident. Instead, he followed every game online and supported his teammates. He worked out his upper body, went to therapy and studied the games he loved until he returned to the court and field.
