What do they love most about playing their sport(s)?

It’s hard. It requires the fierce competitive drive to get up early to train and to work on your craft constantly. But it also brings focus and joy to something you are passionate about. I don’t like to stand still, but I find stillness when I run. In competition, I find I can be social and joke around with fellow runners, sharing stories and ideas that I wouldn’t with others or in other situations. Running lets me be my true self.

Who inspires them—on or off the field—and why?

First, middle and long-distance runner Sifan Hassan. Not only is she supremely talented as a runner, but she never quits. She is the ultimate competitor, an Olympic medallist who runs with so much joy and humility. She is inspiring. Also, my coach Janet Wynands. She is dedicated not only to the craft and training of her runners, but she also cares about their long-term growth as athletes and as people. She inspires through her dedication, her joy, her kindness and her endless knowledge.

What’s one moment in their athletic journey that makes you proudest?

Walking away from competitive hockey. I had played competitive hockey for 5 years before making the decision to focus on running. It was hard to step away from the safety of friends and community, met with support, confusion and disappointment. But my passion informed my pursuit. I still play House League hockey in the winter, but couldn’t imagine my life without running. I think it is important for young athletes to follow their talents and their passions, regardless of what others may think.
