What do they love most about playing their sport(s)?

Malia loves Brazilian Jiu Jitsu because, to her, it’s more than just a sport — it’s a way of life. She believes Jiu Jitsu empowers women and young girls & boys by giving them the tools and confidence to walk through the world knowing they can defend themselves. Beyond the physical skills, Jiu Jitsu instills a deep sense of confidence, discipline, and personal accomplishment that carries over into all areas of life. BJJ brings a sense of community and lasting friendships.

Who inspires them—on or off the field—and why?

Malia is deeply inspired by her coaches, who demonstrate what true leadership looks like through their dedication, discipline, and encouragement. They show her every day that hard work, consistency, and a positive attitude lead to success both on and off the mats. Thank you to Plattsmouth Jiujitsu & Catch Wrestling (Dave & Stacey Ewing) 10th Planet Omaha (Professor Dalton Flibotte, Professor Matt & Jaimie Hester) & Bellevue Academy of BJJ. (Arnold & Lina Deasis, & Professor Jason Minor)

What’s one moment in their athletic journey that makes you proudest?

Malia is proudest of the courage it takes simply to step onto the competition mats, whether she wins or loses. She understands that victory is rewarding, but the real growth comes from having the bravery to compete, learn, and come back stronger — even after facing defeat. For Malia, each competition is a chance to test herself, improve, and build resilience. She knows that continuing to show up, regardless of the outcome, is what truly shapes her both as an athlete and as a person.
