The mental fortitude and discipline it instills. Being an athlete isn’t just physical; it requires character, discipline, grit, and the emotional intelligence to understand it’s not just about winning, but what you’re learning through the process and in betweens. Every practice, every game, every win, every loss is building my character.
My mom. The fiery Latina in her has pushed me to be the best version of myself. When I go into the court or into the field, I’m not just representing myself; I’m representing every sacrifice, every worry, every dollar, every tear, every smile, every cheer that she has laid out for me to follow my path.
Being captain two years in a row for my team. I used to doubt my leadership capabilities, until I found the environment to flourish. I had coaches that enabled me to really hone in on my strengths and push through my self doubts. That allowed me to project onto my teammates and instill that same confidence in every practice, every game. We don’t lose; we learn and we grow, the same way we’re learning and growing into the individuals that will be successful in the future.
