Receive Text UpdatesWhat Nash loves most about sports is being part of a community – a team. It’s the strength of teammates and coaches behind you, meeting new friends who become like family, the thrill of winning, and learning from tough losses. Sports made Nash strong, mentally and physically, and gave him the willpower to fight cancer and the strength to strive for health on the other side. As Nash says, “you’re only disabled if you think you are… I just need to work a little harder this time.”
It’s not something that inspires him, it’s someone. Ever since he was diagnosed with osteosarcoma and lost his leg, he's thought more and more about Terry Fox and what he battled through. Not only did he learn to walk again, he ran across Canada to show that cancer wouldn't stop him. Since 1980, the Terry Fox Foundation has raised $850 million for cancer research. To honour Terry and everyone fighting cancer, Nash strives to get back on his feet and play sports again.
Despite all the highs Nash has experienced in sports, one of my proudest moments has been seeing Nash support his teammates after his osteosarcoma diagnosis. He even coached his ball hockey team this summer – a team he played on for five years. A true athlete at heart, he shows up on the ice/field/court or sidelines. His drive to return never fades. As Nash says, “the comeback is better than the setback.” He’ll be back stronger than ever, and I believe my proudest moment is still to come.
