What do they love most about playing their sport(s)?

Roman loves the mental discipline it provides. Both on and off the mat, he’s able to slow his mind and takes things one step at a time. As someone who suffers from trauma related anxiety, it has been an incredible achievement for him to be able to keep his mind focused on the things that are important and matter the most in the moment, taking him one step closer to accomplishing his goals. He is able to apply it to his everyday life, especially his academics.

Who inspires them—on or off the field—and why?

His grandpa, and step dad, and anyone who has faced adversity or hardship and still managed to stay on the right path to success. He watches his grandfather and stepfather work harder than anyone he’s known, and being successful despite the difficulties and hardships they have been through to get to where they are now. He watches his stepfather work his hands to the bone every day to provide for his family despite the stress it entails and strives to have that same dedication in his future.

What’s one moment in their athletic journey that makes you proudest?

Roman suffered a very traumatic experience and as a result took a break from wrestling for a year. One day he got up went to only 2 practices and won the district and subsequently the kid’s state tournament. He worked everyday to be better and better. Went to every practice, and asked for private lessons. He won every match and tournament from that moment on, and then as a freshman, beat out a 2 time state champion in the High School state championships, and then the US Open U15 52kg.
