What do they love most about playing their sport(s)?

The part of sports that Anna Ruth loves the most is being part of a team. She appreciates being able to rely on teammates because you can be the best player on the court or the field, but you can’t be successful and win alone. You need your team no matter what.

Who inspires them—on or off the field—and why?

Anna Ruth draws inspiration for playing from coaches who invest time in her, such as Mario Mincey, Destiny Brown, Allen Wallace, and her nana, Cindy Bennett. She also is inspired by players at the college and pro-level such as Georgia Southern’s Kayla Cleaveland, who is a great defender, shooter, and amazing person. She continually studies players at the pro-level, watching the defense of Aaliyah Boston and Kelsey Mitchell, as well as the unparalleled passing and assists of Caitlin Clark.

What’s one moment in their athletic journey that makes you proudest?

Anna Ruth is fearless on the court. She played in a basketball tournament earlier this year against girls three to four years older than her who were at least eighteen inches taller than her. She had no fear. She was willing to guard them, take a charge, and drive the lane. They didn’t win that game, but she hustled hard in every minute she played, regardless of the score.
