What do they love most about playing their sport(s)?

Avery loves playing team sports because they allow her to be part of something bigger than herself. She enjoys the competitiveness and the challenge of pushing herself to improve. Knowing her teammates are counting on her motivates her to give her best and take her responsibilities seriously. Team sports build trust, discipline, and friendships while helping her stay in shape, keep active, and have fun.

Who inspires them—on or off the field—and why?

Her cousin, Theo, is her inspiration. He passed away on February 27, 2021 from MDS and COVID complications. He was 23 years old. He had fought courageously for 8 years and refused to give up even after multiple operations and complications. Theo showed her the power of positivity and the importance of being strong mentally (as well as physically). He showed her that when all odds are against you, you have to find a way to face that challenge and give it your all.

What’s one moment in their athletic journey that makes you proudest?

The first hour of volleyball tryouts her freshman year, Avery broke her ankle, ending her season before it began. Though devastated, she stayed positive. She attended every practice and game, worked hard in rehab, supported her teammates, and cheered them on without being asked. She continued playing offseason. Her dedication and leadership stood out, and the varsity coach recognized those qualities by naming her a team captain her sophomore year.
