Avila has faced numerous challenges and faces each obstacle with courage, dedication, and heart — and encourages her peers.
Thank you for supporting Avila in this competition. Your participation made a huge impact for the Why Not You Foundation and their mission to empower change in the world, one individual at a time and one child at a time.
What is Youth Athlete of the Year?
Learn MoreWhat Avila loves most is the opportunity to challenge herself every day. She enjoys setting goals, pushing past her limits, and seeing the results of the work she puts in. High jump has taught her patience, confidence, and resilience because every jump is a chance to learn and improve. She also loves being part of the track and field community, where athletes support one another while still competing at a high level.
I am most inspired by my mom. Watching her work tirelessly, overcome hardships, and continue to provide encouragement and support for not only me but all 5 of my siblings as well. She has shown me what true strength and perseverance look like. My mom has taught me that success isn’t about having an easy path—it’s about continuing to move forward no matter what challenges come your way. That example motivates me to work hard, stay grateful, and never give up on my goals.
The moment that makes me proudest was watching her fight her way back after a serious health setback. She spent eight days in the hospital recovering from a ruptured appendix and then faced additional challenges while recovering. Being away from the sport she loved was difficult, but she never lost sight of her goals. She showed patience, determination, and resilience as she rebuilt her strength and worked her way back into training and competition.
