What do they love most about playing their sport(s)?

Caleb loves to MOVE! Whether he’s running, competing, or cheering on his teammates, he loves the excitement of seeing what his body can do. He’s competitive, loves a challenge, and definitely loves winning but what excites him most is beating his own best. Type 1 diabetes may require a few extra game-day steps, but once Caleb is ready, he’s just another kid chasing the finish line and having a whole lot of fun getting there.

Who inspires them—on or off the field—and why?

Caleb is inspired by people who do hard things without letting those hard things steal their joy. He admires athletes who fall, adjust, and get back in the game. But he’s also learning to inspire himself. Every time he manages his T1D steps onto the field/track and competes anyway, he proves that challenges can change the way you run your race but they don’t get to decide where you finish.

What’s one moment in their athletic journey that makes you proudest?

There isn’t just one finish line that makes me proud it’s watching Caleb choose the starting line over and over again. Type 1 diabetes doesn’t take a timeout for practice or competition. Some days require extra checks, extra preparation, and extra patience. Yet he adjusts, gets back out there, and gives it everything he has. I’m proud that he isn’t chasing sympathy he’s chasing goals. Every time I watch him run, hoop, bat or whatever sport he’s trying, I see an overcomer in motion!
