What do they love most about playing their sport(s)?

Glove saves and friends! Enzo loves playing goalie because every shot is a new opportunity to make a save. He has fun moving in the net and feels confident when he steps into the crease. He loves watching his buddies make rushes and awesome plays, and gets so excited when they score. He cheers for his teammates from the opposite side of the rink every time! He also loves seeing how much everyone improves as the season goes on.

Who inspires them—on or off the field—and why?

Coach Alex, Enzo’s second hockey coach and the first coach who helped him in net, inspires him. He is kind, encouraging and always believes in Enzo. He listens, pushes him to get better and makes everyone feel included. He showed Enzo that you can help someone improve while still being kind. He always took time to work with Enzo at practice, and his pep talks at the net after a sweet save were Enzo’s favourite!

What’s one moment in their athletic journey that makes you proudest?

What makes me proudest is the way Enzo approaches the opposing goalie after a game, win or loss, to tell them how well they played. I can encourage him to work hard, persevere and keep improving, but that kind of sportsmanship comes from his heart. I saw it fully this year, especially after a hard-fought game when he told a young goalie how well he thought she played and encouraged her to keep it up. Her face lit up and I was reminded that the kind of person he is matters more than the score.
