This level isn’t easy. Early mornings, missed fun, clean eating. My son does it quietly and puts in the work daily. My heart is so full.

What is Youth Athlete of the Year?
Learn MoreBoxing makes me push myself every day. I started when I was 4 years old. What I love most is the boxing community, my mentors, especially my older boxing bros. They support me like family and keep me humble. I love traveling and meeting my role models like Mike Tyson, Andre Ward, and others. Winning the Mike Tyson Invitational was huge. As a 12-year-old Black American athlete, I’m proud to represent my community and work hard for what’s next. Because I’m just getting started. —Bodhi Johnson
Of course my dad because he’s there every day putting in the work. But the person who really inspires me most is my Yahya. She’s had several spinal operations and lives with chronic pain. But she’s still always there for our family. She’s a cool grandma who plays with us, listens to rap music with me and sings along. She never complains even when I know she’s hurting. She taught me to be tough, kind, and never quit. She’s my role model in and out the ring. —Bodhi Johnson
The moment I’m proudest of wasn’t in the ring. It was after Bodhi’s only school fight. He won, and the next day everyone was talking about it and teasing the other kid. When kids gathered to congratulate Bodhi, he stopped them. He said “That’s a fight that never should’ve happened. We’ve been friends since kindergarten.” Then he went and apologized. Now they’re besties. That’s the kid we’re raising. —Bodhi’s Dad, Eric II
