What is Youth Athlete of the Year?
Learn MoreIn Gus’ words— I meet new people in all my sports because in my small town of Clark, CO which is near Steamboat, CO we all play for one team. So kids are from all the schools.I love playing lots of sports but basketball has given me a lot of confidence. Even in school finding basketball gave me something to focus on at school in my writing classes and English. Really in all my subjects. I love lacrosse and skiing and golf too. And I love basketball stats.
Michael Jordan and Ja Morant because they are so athletic and give back to their communities. I love watching them play and love how competitive Jordan is. My coach Tanner is really committed to having great sports in our town and we focus on character building not just winning. My uncle Ben teaches me a ton about sports and teamwork and my mom and dad support me in all my sports and come to all my games.
As his mom, I saw Gus struggle to find his place and his voice for a minute. When he found basketball his confidence exploded, his self esteem and character came alive. He’s such an empathetic guy and we see this in how he interacts with his teammates and coaches and against his competitors. He fiercely wants to win and compete but he takes care of people around him .
