What do they love most about playing their sport(s)?

I love basketball for many reasons. My dad introduced me to the game, and it has allowed us to make memories and meet people from around the world. Basketball is serious and fun, keeps me active, and makes me happy. My dad says, “What you do in practice, you will do in the game.” I apply this lesson to school and life. Practice is like homework, and games are like tests. Winning, losing, and grades show what I’ve learned, achieved, and where I can continue to improve.

Who inspires them—on or off the field—and why?

My dad inspires and motivates me to be the best I can be on and off the court. He believes in me and teaches me to always be who I am. Our dap before each game reminds me of our daily affirmations: “I am Black. I am Brown. I am Bold. I am Beautiful.” They remind me to embrace who I am and aspire to be as an Afro-Mexican woman, student, artist, family and community member. I know I can be me at home, in my community, in the classroom, and on the court, one breath at a time.

What’s one moment in their athletic journey that makes you proudest?

My proudest moment was when Jade told me basketball was the sport she wanted to be the best at. As a young man, I felt obligated to play because my father played basketball. When Jade chose the game for herself, I saw another part of her blossom and another way for the community to see the beauty of her soul. She makes everyone feel special and embraces people no matter where they are from or their skill level, all while being herself and continuing to grow as a person and athlete.
