What do they love most about playing their sport(s)?

JaMal has always said basketball is not only his outlet to clear his mind and help him think. But a game plan he is beginning to understand will help him in all areas while becoming a man. Having to plan ahead, execute properly, and have discipline.. three key things a player and a MAN should live by. Also says that sound of the “swish” when he makes a basket, the way his teammates bring life, fun and family to the game, the brotherhood… makes basketball his passion. His first love.

Who inspires them—on or off the field—and why?

Mal would tell you (and this is truly how he talks).. “a book is not just one chapter.., it has several” He would say all of his coaches. Past and Present. They always spoke life into him. They taught him not only the game, but how to understand the craft of the game. Me., his Mom. My Mally knows I’m the loudest person in whatever room there is for him. Having a mother believing in him., makes him feel unbreakable.

What’s one moment in their athletic journey that makes you proudest?

Two years into JaMal learning how to play basketball. It was his second year playing AAU ball, and this time, he didn’t ride the bench as much😌. But during the end of the season banquet dinner,, my son who taught himself how to dribble and shoot in the basement during the COVID pandemic, received “The Most Valuable Player Award” “The Ayden Carter Award “ and “The Kobe Bryant Award”… in recognizing JaMal. The coaches all had amazing things to rave about my son. Watching him glow in his dream.
