What is Youth Athlete of the Year?
Learn MoreJohn loves the competition and the challenge of getting better every time he steps on the court. Basketball gives him a place to push himself, lead, and show the work he puts in when no one is watching. He loves being part of a team, encouraging his teammates, and making the right play—not just for himself, but for everyone around him. Most of all, he simply loves the game. Basketball is something he genuinely lives and breathes.
I would have to say John inspires himself. From a young age, he has always challenged himself to get better. He sets his own goals, pushes past his limits, and is rarely satisfied with staying where he is. He watches his own progress and uses it as motivation to work even harder. His drive comes from within—he wants to become a better player, teammate, leader, and version of himself every day.
One of my proudest moments was finding a note John had written outlining his goal of playing varsity basketball as a freshman. What stood out wasn’t just the goal—it was the plan he created on his own to achieve it. No one told him to write it or pushed him to make one. It showed me that he didn’t just want success; he understood that he had to work for it. Seeing that level of determination and self-discipline at his age made me incredibly proud.
