Khalisie’s first year running track and she has qualified for Regionals. It is a reflection of her hard work and ambition, even on off days.
Thank you for supporting Khalisie in this competition. Your participation made a huge impact for the Why Not You Foundation and their mission to empower change in the world, one individual at a time and one child at a time.
What is Youth Athlete of the Year?
Learn MoreKhalisie loves her teammates more than anything else. Having to move to Southern California from Harlem New York (due to military parents), was a huge culture change. Khalisie faced unexpected challenges and bullying being the only dark skinned girl in her classes. The track team was the first time she felt at home and fit in with the other girls. Her track team became family. She also loves track because she is competitive by nature and loves to see her dedication pay off on race days.
Khalisie is inspired by her mother both on and off the track. Her mom used to run track, and she is Khalisie's biggest fan. Khalisie always calls her mom a superhero, because she watches her protect her country AND her family. Her mom works out with her and trains her to be better every single day. Khalisie loves her morning affirmations and prayers with her mom, that help her feel confident and strong on the track, at school and at home.
I'd have to say the proudest was at the Pacific Coast Shockwaves Invitational. It is one of the most competitive track meets of the season. This was Khalisie's first time at this track meet and her first time on a relay team. She dropped the baton and it crushed her so much that she cried. What made me so proud in this moment was her resilience. She didn't use this moment to give up, but instead she stayed confident and practiced even harder. Her relay team is now #10 in the nation!
