The experience McKayla admires most about softball is how her mind can be relieved from the chaos of schoolwork and everyday challenges a teenager faces. When she is crouched behind the plate, McKayla has confidence, determination, and is fearless in the game. When McKayla is waiting for the softball to reach her, it gives her a rush of adrenaline, and you can see her determination to get the ball and make big plays. McKayla loves supporting her teammates and the connection she has with them.
I think the people who inspire McKayla on and off the field the most are us (her family). We have been to every practice and game near and far. We really show up for McKayla and let her know that we are her biggest fans. McKayla's grandmother and grandfather, who are in their 80's and not familiar with the sport, learned it by watching McKayla play. We will continue to support her in every way possible.
Our starting and only pitcher blew out her ACL in the second game of the Sophomore year, and McKayla, as the starting catcher, volunteered and pitched the rest of the season so that the team did not have to forfeit. As parents, we were extremely proud of her for taking on a new challenge and giving it everything she had with a positive attitude and determination to succeed. Her perseverance and love for the game continue to impress us immensely.
