What do they love most about playing their sport(s)?

Mia loves the challenge of figuring out how to compete and win games against other skilled opponents. She believes that the mental aspect of tennis is just as important as the physical. Winning requires mental toughness!

Who inspires them—on or off the field—and why?

Naomi Osaka is Mia’s biggest inspiration on the court. Mia says Ms. Osaka’s self-awareness and willingness to be her authentic self inspires her to unapologetically be who she is. Off the court, there’s no question about it. It’s her mother. Mia loves her mother’s strength and ability to accomplish everything. Mia says her mother’s ability to manage the household while her father was away in the military made her want to work harder than ever.

What’s one moment in their athletic journey that makes you proudest?

Mia’s proudest moment in her athletic journey was when she finished first place in a tennis tournament. She won two matches to make it to the finals. In the finals, she found herself down 4-1 while playing to 6 games. She eventually went on to win 7-5 in a hard fought match. Jokingly, she will say she channeled her main character energy, but truthfully she says she kept herself calm and kept saying just win the next point. It was quite a match!
