What is Youth Athlete of the Year?
Learn MoreMikayla loves figure skating because it feels uniquely hers. She loves the mix of athleticism, music, and artistry—and the endless challenge of what comes next. Seeing another skater do something incredible doesn’t intimidate her; it makes her want to learn it. There is always another jump, another skill, another way to grow. For Mikayla, that’s part of the magic: discovering just how far she can go.
Mikayla draws inspiration from all three of her coaches. Renae inspires her through the way she teaches and cares for her students. Liz inspires her with her powerful energy on the ice and firm but kind coaching. Cedric inspires her with his humor, thoughtfulness, and willingness to take on challenges. Christopher Chapa, who has been like a brother throughout her skating journey, inspires her through his jumps and consistency and helped spark her goal of making the National Development Team.
The moment I’m most proud of wasn’t a medal. It was New Year’s Eve, when Mikayla chose Excel and set her sights on the National Final in Boston. She had only been skating a few months, and a national stage felt almost impossible. But she said yes to the challenge and worked for it. She entered three qualifiers, won all three, then won the National Final. I’m proud of the medals, but most proud of the girl who believed she belonged there before she had any proof.
