What is Youth Athlete of the Year?
Learn MorePetra didn’t grow up knowing she wanted to be a rhythmic gymnast—she discovered it almost by accident and fell in love. She loves the music, the apparatus, the challenge of learning something new and the thrill of finally performing a skill she’s practiced hundreds of times. Finding rhythmic taught her that sometimes the thing you love most is something you haven’t discovered yet.
Petra is inspired by Olympic champion Darja Varfolomeev. She loves how Darja combines incredible difficulty with artistry and makes even the hardest skills look effortless. Petra watches her routines not just as a fan, but to learn—studying her expression, technique and confidence. She’s also inspired by every single teammate that made the choice to walk through those gym doors and dedicate themselves to training.
My proudest moment was Petra’s first day in a rhythmic gym. She had several years of experience in recreational artistic gymnastics and soccer, and is a self-taught contortionist, but rhythmic was new. Surrounded by athletes who had trained for years, she was never intimidated. She was fearless enough to stand beside them, humble enough to begin at the beginning, and eager to learn. I’m proud of every achievement since, but I’m proudest of the girl who walked in unafraid to learn a new sport.
