Learning new skills and getting to show what you can do on the pitch is so much fun. It feels amazing when you work hard on something in training and then can execute and help your team in a game situation. Rhys values the friendships he has made as a result of his sport, and even though many of his friends are now on different teams, there is an ongoing bond and mutual respect. ✊
Rhys finds inspiration from his favourite professional players of whom he studies and tries to emulate. Canadian soccer star Alphonso Davies is a particular favourite - he has inspired Rhys to chase his dreams of becoming a professional soccer player. Why not him? He has the passion and the drive and he knows that it takes a lot of hard work. Seeing someone like Davies, do so much for soccer in Canada, and play at the highest level, makes Rhys feel like he can do the same one day.
In one of his games, he was fouled quite seriously with a flying tackle to the thigh. He was crying and in pain so they tried to send him off. There was only a minute left of a 0-0 game. He was determined to take the penalty shot in spite of the pain. He took a deep breath, kept his composure and scored the game winner. I was proud of his resilience and determination to take that shot, regardless of the outcome, I was proud of him. A true warrior.
