Join the CompetitionRJ loves the puzzle of wrestling and jiu-jitsu. Every opponent presents a different problem to solve—finding openings, anticipating reactions, and choosing the right technique. Win or lose, there’s always a new puzzle waiting for him. Even coaching other kids becomes its own puzzle: figuring out how they learn, what they need, and how to help them improve. That constant challenge is what keeps him excited to train, compete, and coach.
His dad, one of his main coaches, inspires him through the resilience and determination he developed as a disabled combat veteran. RJ is also inspired by John Danaher, whose instructionals he studies. He loves Danaher’s ability to break grappling down into problems, systems, and solutions—matching RJ’s own love for the puzzle of the sport.
What makes me proudest isn’t a medal—it’s the person his journey is shaping. He’ll travel 5 hours one way to train, study instructionals, exercise, do yoga, and coach others. That same drive carries into school: he’s entering 6th grade while testing at a high-school academic level. More than his success, I’m proud of his work ethic, discipline, kindness, and desire to help others improve.
