What is Youth Athlete of the Year?
Learn MoreWe first noticed Tanjien’s passion for gymnastics when she was four years old, and that passion has only grown. What she loves most is the challenge of pushing herself beyond what she thought was possible. She loves learning new skills, overcoming fear and the excitement of finally mastering something she has worked so hard to achieve. Gymnastics challenges her physically and mentally, and she loves that there is always something new to learn, improve and accomplish.
Tanjien is inspired by the accomplished gymnasts who came before her—athletes who have paved the way and shown her what’s possible. She loves watching how they approach challenges, overcome setbacks and continue to show up, even when things don’t go as planned. Their determination reminds her that success isn’t just about winning; it’s about resilience, discipline and continuing to push yourself forward.
I’m proudest watching Tanjien turn her passion for fitness into service. Through her Girl Scout Silver Award, she created an initiative making fitness fun and accessible for kids ages 7–12. She has now taught more than 400 children. Hearing her say, “Mommy, I really like working with young kids,” made me especially proud. She’s learning that being an athlete is about more than competition—it’s about inspiring others and giving back.
