What do they love most about playing their sport(s)?

Wesley is a true social butterfly who enjoys connecting with people wherever he goes. One of the greatest advantages he has at just 12 years old is the life lessons he’s gained through sports. Being part of a team has taught him that success comes from putting others first, working together, and supporting those around him. He understands that being selfless, encouraging his teammates, and celebrating everyone else’s accomplishments is just as important as achieving his own.

Who inspires them—on or off the field—and why?

Hockey has been a part of Wesley’s family for generations, and it is much more than just a sport—it’s a family tradition. One of the people he looks up to most is his Papa, Kirk Fortner, whose love for the game has had a lasting impact on Wesley. Watching, learning from, and sharing the game with his grandfather has inspired Wesley to work hard, respect the sport, and carry on the values that hockey has passed down through their family.

What’s one moment in their athletic journey that makes you proudest?

There have been so many moments that have made me proud of Wesley, but what fills my heart the most is watching his genuine passion for the game. There is something incredibly special about seeing the pure, raw joy and determination that only a young athlete can have. His love for hockey isn’t forced or expected—it’s authentic. Watching him celebrate with his teammates, battle through Canadians, and pour everything he has into every shift reminds me why youth sports are so powerful.
